MUSIC ALBUM & SOME LYRICS/SONGS

NACHNE SHAAM KAURE |
Folksy treat! The unusual name of the album comes from Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s time when the name “Shaam Kaur†was used unlike today’s goriya, kudi or soni, inspiring DM to use it to make people sit up and notice. And notice they did. For Nachni Shaam Kaure was his first ever attempt with Indian folk songs along with a completely new look. Turning designer, Mehndi got rid of his traditional chogas and bandgalas here replacing them by self-designed shorter jackets! As for the songs, which became popular numbers very soon after the release included an assortment of folk songs including a Bhojpuri number and a Marathi number Kala kaowa kaat khaega based on the “Laavni†in the same language besides the naughty, immensely popular with the youth, Chajju baniya. At the same time, he maintained his reputation for including all sorts of songs in his albums by balancing the peppy folk numbers by Mere alakh niranjan naal naal, which almost had a surreal feel to it. Nachne Shaam Kaure was DM’s effort to move with the trends in the music industry, at the same time, trying to maintain his vernacular independence and style.

EK DANA |
A tryst with kids! Ek dana nai do dane- stole the show in Daler Mehndi's 5th album with Mehndi turning pied piper and leading smiley faced children to peppy beats. Using loud instrument s like the drum and the dhol, he brought with this new album, new sounds and a new look for himself including choreography by Bollywood's Farah Khan . Along with the hip-hop rhythms that the album boasted off, its nine tracks consisted mainly of Amir Khusro compositions sung to the lilt of an unusual combination of four instruments- a never before used restriction- the tabla, harmonium, sarangi and rawab. The result was peppy renditions of a mixture of western pop and Hindi classical sounds in songs like Hum Dil Ke Hain Kamzor and Tu Kudi Punjabi. which mostly had Hindi lyrics and boom boom which became every child's delight. A notable song that had teenagers sing to its tune, was Sajan mere Satrangiya being high tempo and upbeat. Al l said and done, with this album, Mehndi proved that he could move with the music industry's fast changing scene keeping intact his versatility and unique style.

TUNAK TUNAK TUN |
Graduation time! “Tunak Tunak tun†was the next rage to hit the country. From small children to teenagers and even the young hearted in their middle ages, all sang and danced to the tune of this perky and vivacious song. This album also marked his venture into more advanced technology with Daler Mehndi being shown as 4 dimensional in the song video. Besides the never-before-used technology, English lyrics were also introduced to the delight of his non-Punjabi speaking fans who now labeled his songs “fusionâ€. Famous Italian singer Ricky Martin stamped this with greeting his Indian fans with an exuberant “Balle Balleâ€! Har Taraf Tera Jalwa became a huge Hindi hit while Har Pal Tadapde Hain… in which 40 violins and sarangi players trained during the R. D. Burman era played together to produce ecstatic music.

HO JAYEGI BALLE BALLE |
The phenomenon arrives… With Ho Jayegi Balle Balle, Mehndi kept abreast with the times introducing catchy beats and synthetic music that blended perfectly with Punjabi beats creating music so versatile that it could be played on any occasion. His signature style of dancing was seen here too, albeit a trifle differently. For now, eager music fans were lapping it all up even outside India with “Mehndi shows†forever in demand. He made “Balle Balle†into an appealing catch line, which was no longer restricted to the Punjabi community!

DARDI RAB RAB |
Inspiration ‘la Mehndi! Remember the interlocking of arms that became a “have-to include†dance step in Indian films? The signature style that Daler Mehndi introduced in his 2nd album, Dardi Rab Rab and made it into a brand mark. Seeing the response of music lovers, he introduced more than just good music, he gave them fusion, typical Punjabi dance steps that were easy to follow, he wore colorful Maharaja robes with Diamonte’ turbans inspired by the darbar of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Punjabi music had arrived in style once again. For it was no longer “folkâ€, but world music.

BOLO TA RA RA |
Fresh, energetic, peppy, melancholy, all in one album. Music inspired by his mother, traditional Punjabi folk. The vision of blending Punjabi folk with upbeat bhangra that carved a league of his own. Dil mera naal naal, a peppy composition that became every teenager’s catch line for pursuing their love and Sajna dur na jaae, a passionate number that made people think of their loved ones.

BIOGRAPHY
Born on August 18, 1967, into a family of musicians, Mehndi is the typical lion-hearted Leo. He was named after the character of a dacoit, Daku Daler Singh. He left home at the age of 14, to study under the legendary Rahat Ali Khan Saheb of Patiala Gharana at Gorakhpur. After years of intense training and having honed not only his vocal skills, but also learnt the tabla, harmonium and tanpura, the mellifluous Mehndi moved to Delhi along with his family in 1983, and mounted his professional career, initially singing ghazals inspired by the poetry of Qateel Shifai and Firaq Gorakhpuri.
Forming his own group in 1991, it wasn’t long before he had the whole of Delhi swinging to his tunes. Not just the pulsating music and foot-tapping numbers, the powerhouse performer had people talking about his sense of style: the quintessential diamante-studded pug and the flowing robes inspired by the wardrobe of Baba Ala Singh, sipahsalar of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Three years after constituting his band, Mehndi emerged as the most sought-after and popular performer at Almaty, Kazhakastan, where he won the Second Prize at the Azia Danysy Festival, 1994. It was also the year when Magnasound was quick to realise his multi-platinum potential. It not only signed him for a release next year, but such was his pre-release popularity that the label gave Mehndi top billing! Pretty soon, the entire sub-continent resounded with just one note _ Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra! Yes, the Sardar from Patna, had hit the bull’s eye, not in his second, not in his third, but in his very first attempt at Punjabi pop.
The nation screamed for more, bhangramuffins went berserk and people all over the world were succumbing to the Mehndi mania, which had only begun. Bolo Ta Ra Ra Ra’s opening lines _ Gadey te na chadhdi, gadheeray te na chadhdi _ could be heard across the country, channels loved him and Mehndi debuted on Times FM’s Indipop 10 on number 2, climbing to the top spot in two weeks and remaining on No.1 a whopping six months!100,000 copies of the famous bolo ta ra ra ra were sold in Malayalam speaking Kerala alone! Tam Tam Festival in France, an international trade fair for music witnessed this new magic called Bhangra pop and had everybody go balle balle !! |
Big B, known for his own style of dancing in movies, insisted Mehndi perform live along with him for Mrityudaata, Bachchan’s comeback vehicle. The Big B even put a condition that no matter what, they had to fit in the words _ Dardi Rab Rab Kardi _ somewhere in the new song so that instead of Mehndi, this time around Bachchan could be featured singing the whole stanza! This is perhaps the highest tribute to Indian pop and its most popular artist. The rest, as they say, is history. Diana King, the R&B diva, was so anxious to meet the Boss of Indipop that she waited in Goa to witness the Mehndi mania herself! Even the commercial Ho Ho Re that Mehndi composed for the multinational became an anthem for the young! The same was then translated in Tamil and aired across Thailand, Malaysia, Atlanta and all over India.
He has a lifestyle that shouts pop icon. In fact, it would be right to add that he is the only Indian pop star with an image of a pop star. Mehndi, the man has liking and an eye for all things beautiful. A collector of gems, the man has an enviable collection of not only precious stones but all things that catch his fancy. Be it the kasturi ittar or the string of Basra pearls, Mehndi collects all this and more with much enthusiasm and takes so much care. A self-confessed car aficionado, the man loves to drive around in style. The latest acquisition of his car stable, a black Volkswagen Beetle, is his pride and joy right now. |
